Latch Hooks and Outlet Malls

When my husband was a kid he went to the beach every summer. Whether on rainy days, or too sunburned to go out into the sun days or having a rash days my husband mentioned that he would work on a latch hook. I know this dates me, I used to do these too.

When rain was the reason that kept them out of the ocean, the whole family would go to the local outlet mall. In fact they loved this idea so much, they would go one evening every year during the week, rain or no rain.

The Rental’s Activities

Rentals are usually stocked with different things. These activities are from the owners but also from the many renters over the span of time. You will find books, puzzles and board games.

Activities to bring from home

  1. Pick a puzzle your family will enjoy putting together. This puzzle can be something that can be done during the evening hours too.
  2. Fill a small tub with craft making materials. Think of what crafts you would like your family to work on and make sure you have everything. For instance, think of what you would need for a project with seashells. Another option is to forgo the small craft tub and go out as a family to get the supplies on your vacation while dodging the raindrops.
  3. Go to the library and check out books with your family. Each person can bring a couple books on the vacation. These can be read in the car, in the evening, sitting by the pool or on the beach, etc.
  4. A ruler is a fun activity for younger kids. They can go around the rental measuring things. You can make a game of it. For instance, how many things can they find that are 10″ long?
  5. There are so many different card games. The normal deck of cards is perfect for solitaire, euchre, rummy, etc. Then there are the many different Uno games as well as the other games that are game specific. Pick your family favorites and then add one they don’t know.

Know what’s around you

Before you load the van for your sun-bound trip, check out what sites in the area are interesting to your family. Is there a museum or historical site in the area? Ask Google the question: What is the best thing to see in _____.” You can also ask Google the best thing to eat near your rental. Whether it’s raining or you want to eat out one night, don’t miss the place where they prepare the food that is famous in the area.
