Don’t forget these essential items on your next trip! Check out my packing list for flying, including electronics, maps, snacks, and more. My 2 children, my husband, and I flew to Bozeman for a 10 day vacation. We packed our backpacks for our carry on and everything else was checked at the airport.

Packing List

Early June 5th-15th 38°-75°

Carry On Bag

  • phone and charger
  • ipad and charger
  • empty water bottle
  • paper maps (I printed out all of the area maps as well as writing out all of the directions to each location. I used these MANY times while in the parks.)
  • headphones
  • chap stick (For dry lips on the plane. None of us used this on the plane)
  • snacks (Make sure they are approved by TSA before packing them.)
  • portable chargers (These must go in your carry on bag. We ABSOLUTELY used these throughout our trip) I like small, light ones so they pack well. The Anker brand has always been great for me. If you don’t want the cord, I have also used the iWalk. It good for charging once before needing to be recharged. They are specific for your phone so pay attention to that: USB-C and Lightning
  • gum
  • National Park pass (We needed this the afternoon we got off the plane)
  • Travel journal and pencils (This went in my bag. It had loads of information inside it as well as space to write about each day.)
  • back pack (Make sure it fits the size required for carry ons for the flight you are on.)
  • Wear on the plane: hiking shoes, hiking pants, long sleeve shirt (We drove to Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone after we arrived in Bozeman. I wanted everyone dressed to start our adventure when we landed.

Check-In Suitcase

  • 4 pairs of underwear (Based on where we were staying on day 4, we could do laundry.)
  • 2 Sport bras- These are fantastic! They are easy to get and off and comfortable.
  • pajamas
  • 4 pairs of socks (Everyone could bring the socks they wanted. I brought hiking socks. My favorite are the Darn Tough ones. They have a lifetime guarantee.)
  • 4 shirts: long and short sleeved. I brought Merino wool long sleeve shirts. As they are wool, they regulate your body temperature better.
  • 4 pairs of pants (My son brought joggers. My husband brought 1 pair of jeans and 2 hiking pants. My daughter brought leggings and jeans. I brought leggings w/ pockets and convertible hiking pants. We were plenty warm)
  • 1 hoodie/sweatshirt. (This was our heaviest layer)
  • 1 hat (We all brought winter hats but we didn’t use them. The baseball hat we all brought was perfect.)
  • Bathing suit (This was for the Hot Springs and the two hotels we stayed at that had a pool)
  • Sun glasses (We all used them. It was, thankfully, sunny almost all of our trip.)
  • Raincoat (We needed this! Pack ones that can be carried in the your day pack. You don’t want it in your car or hotel when you need one on a hike.)
  • Gloves (We packed this but didn’t use them)

Toiletries (Checked bag)

  • bar of soap
  • Sun screen (We did use this.)
  • moisturizer: face and body
  • deodorant
  • Kleenex
  • toothbrush, paste, floss
  • brush, comb
  • hair ties
  • shaving items

First aide kit (Checked bag)

  • tweezers
  • blister band aides (I always bring these.)
  • band aides
  • hand sanitizer
  • gauze
  • medical tape
  • multi tool/knife
  • scissors

Medicines etc. (Checked bag)

  • Advil, Tylenol, Head Ache medicine
  • Imodium
  • Bug spray and anti itch ointment (We didn’t really have any issues with bugs)
  • Allergy
  • Prescribed meds

Hiking List (Checked bag)

  • Hiking poles – We brought ours. You can rent them when you get there.
  • Binoculars (If you want to see wild life, you MUST invest in some really good ones. Animals are usually out in the distance along the tree line. Scopes are a better option. If you are staying in a town, you can rent one when you get there.)
  • day packs (We each carried our own back pack. We put our snacks, water bottle, raincoat, binoculars and anything else we wanted on the hike that day in our back pack.) Here is a small pack I had for years and is perfect size for kids. My husband loves this Teton Sport one and takes it on all of his hikes. I take my Osprey day pack.
  • a noise maker to alert animals (I used two bag straps. I attached them to my bag and the metal part made noise as they hit together as I walked. Some people had a little cow bell strapped to their back pack.)

Other things we brought (Checked bag)

  • blue tooth speaker (We used this in the airbnb)
  • Washing machine pods and dryer sheets (I brought enough for the amount of loads I was going to do. I placed the pods in a small ziplock and the dryer sheets in another small ziplock)
  • flashlights, batteries (We did not use these)
  • Camera, batteries, SD cards ( I packed this in my carry on bag. My Canon 5 Rebel goes with me on all trips. I did not bring my lap top so I brought extra SD cards.)
  • star chart (My son brought this. He has a small star chart. He did not use it on the trip)
  • plastic ziplock bags (I bring the gallon, sandwich and snack size bags. I always use them. The gallon is used for marinades as well as other things.)
  • Trail mix, protein bars, fruit snacks, propel drink mix, liquid ice packs

Let me know if you packed something else I didn’t take. I will add it onto my list.
