Spend a week on the beautiful Hatteras Beach
Spend a week on the Hatteras Beach and enjoy those around you while reconnecting you with yourself. Hatteras beach is on Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks. It is on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Line. You get the best of both worlds with boogie boarding in the ocean and paddle boarding in the Pamlico Sound.
We spent a week there in 2020 and had the beach, mostly, to ourselves. I would imagine even now that it would not be a crowded beach as it is so far down the Outer Banks.
Our Airbnb House

When we vacation at the beach, we always stay in a place where we can cook. It helps with the budget of the trip. We booked the Airbnb that was not on the beach because that was what we could afford. So for this trip we had to walk to the beach.

Our Airbnb was not close to anything. This is how we like it though. When we go to the beach, we go to sit and play on the beach. We did one day trip. The other things that interested us, we did on the way back home.
important
Location, location, location!
Make sure you don’t just look at the place you want to stay but also where it is in regards to the things you like to have near you. Think about non-beach activities, restaurants, shopping, and groceries. Is the place you found right for you?
Our beach access
We had to walk down a street, cross the main street and then walk down the boardwalk to the beach. There were lots of mosquitos in the grass along the road.
Since we had to walk, we had to make sure we had what we wanted down at the beach with us. Walking back forth was not an option.
On the Beach
riding the waves
This is a perfect beach for boogie boarding and body surfing. The waves are not too hard.

building sand castles
Building sandcastles are fun to make on the beach! Grab your buckets and shovels!

flying kites
We always pick some kites before we go. Flying kites are perfect for the beach!

Looking for shells and animals
A leisure walk down the beach holding a bucket. This is how we spend a relaxing morning or afternoon when we don’t want to swim.
You will be sure to find animals! They are everywhere! Crabs, starfish, fish, seagulls….

sitting under the umbrella

What to do while sitting under the umbrella:
- Bring a book you’ve been wanting to read
- Take a nap
- Stare out at the ocean while enjoy a cool drink
- Watch the kids play
- Talk to your family member sitting next to you
evening walks

Every night after dinner, we headed to the beach to walk as the sun is setting.
Bring a flashlight and see what creatures come out at night.
Pamlico Sound
The water on the sound is calmer. There are many places along the sound that rent paddle boards, kayaks and kiteboarding. You can windsail, fish and go crabbing.
We went out on a day it was threatening to rain. We rented a couple kayaks and a paddle board. The water perfectly calm as we moved through the water.

We returned our rentals and my husband rented a ski jet. We each got a ride. Very fun!
There is lots to do on the sound. In fact if you like the sound better than the beach, stay on the sound side for cheaper!
The Sunset
The best pictures for the sunset are on the sound side.

Day Trips
Biplane Ride
My husband and son drove up the coast to a fly in a biplane. The views were amazing and the ride exhilarating!

cape hatteras light station
We stopped here on our way home.

jockey’s ridge state park
Jockey’s Ridge State Park is located in Nags Head, North Carolina. The park covers a 427-acre area which includes the tallest active sand dune system in the eastern United States.
This was the second stop on our way home. There is a lot of sand! It’s a short walk up a hill to the view on the right:

wright brothers national memorial
The Wright Brothers National Memorial is in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. It honors the first successful airplane flight, conducted by Wilbur and Orville Wright. There are many things to see and to read here. WE did not go into the museum. If you have time, it’s a great stop!

Our drive into Hatteras
There is only one road into Hatteras. When we arrived on this road, there was stand still traffic at 4:00 pm. It took us three hours to drive down to Hatteras which should have taken a little over an hour. There were so many cars! Keep that in mind when driving in!
Something Amusing
While were on the road in Buxton, NC I snapped this photo:

Now if you are from there you know that a Red Drum is a type of fish. Notice the fish above the words Red Drum. This red fish is commonly caught in Buxton.
Now if you are a fan of the movie, “The Shining” this might have a different meaning for you.
