How to pack your liquids bags for the plane

When it’s time to pack your bags, what are you going to put in your liquids bag? Well, the answer is different for everyone. Will you be checking a bag? Will you be staying at a hotel? Will you purchase what you need when you get there. How long is your trip? Do you need specific things that would be hard to find. Read on to discover what works best for you on your next trip.

checking a bag

This is the easy one.

Put everything in your checked bag. Don’t even worry about a liquids bag.

carry on only

This is where you need to be creative.

Your 3.4 oz liquids must fit in a quart sized clear bag.

how often do you wash your hair?

Really. Knowing this will tell you how much shampoo, conditioner and hair products you will need.

If I am going for a weekend trip, I don’t need to bring any hair products because I can wash my hair before I go and it will be great when I am on my trip.

If I am going for a week, I will need to wash my hair once. I will use very small bottles or very well sealed small jars in order to bring what I need.

If you are a simple man, like my husband, he uses whatever hair products the hotel has. He doesn’t bring any hair products.

So often do you need to wash your hair? What products will you need to bring? What is the right size for everything. Can all of that fit into your liquids bag with room to spare?

deoderant

We all need to use this.

Best option: Solid sticks can be any size and does NOT go into your liquids bag.

Gel, roll ons, sprays and creams DO need to go in the liquids bag.

If you don’t have room in your liquids bag and you use a deodorant that isn’t the solid stick, switch to a solid stick for the trip.

toothpaste

This MUST go in your liquids bag.

If you like your toothpaste, find a travel size for the one you use.

If you don’t have room in your liquids bag due to too many different hair products AND you are staying where toothpaste is offered. Leave your toothpaste at home.

shaving cream

This does need to go into the liquids bag. Get a travel size.

razors for shaving

This isn’t a liquid item but it does go with a liquid item. So I am including it here.

You can pack these in your carry on: Disposable razors, cartridge razors, electric razors

You can pack these in your check in bag only: Safety razor blades and straight razors

make up

Some go into the liquid bag and some do not.

Liquid bag musts: Liquid foundation, concealer, liquid highlighter, cream blush, and cream bronzer. Mascara, liquid eyeliner, lip gloss, and liquid lipstick. Setting spray, facial mists, and skin serums

Carry on bag: Powders, pencils, solid and tools

facial moistuizers

This goes into your liquids bag.

My absolute favorite brand is OLAY. I have used the different moisturizing products since I was 18. I take the travel size/sample size with me when I travel. I love how I can fill it with my own bottles if I am running low in my travel jar. It also provides sun screen. As I said, I have only used OLAY.

So find a small jar and fill it with your favorite or pick up a small OLAY moisturizer for your trip. Who knows, you might like it!

medicines

These do not go into the liquids bag. They go into a different bag.

That’s it! Pretty simple. Look at what you use in your morning and evening routines. Decide what must come with you. Pull out the quart sized bag and start filling it. You might have to leave some things behind. If you need everything but it’s not fitting, there are some options:

  1. If you are going with someone else, do they have room?
  2. If there is no bag you can put it in, pick the most available/common and cheapest items and leave them at home. Then when you get to your destination, you can pick it up.

When you get back…

Use up the liquids that you brought first. Before using your products from your regular bottles. This will help you when you plan to travel again.

Why? It had been about 6 months since I traveled last and I noticed, while on another trip, that my shampoo and conditioner had lost its look. It seemed to be separated and clumpy. My little moisturizer jar had a thicker texture.

By using up my travel sized products, I am getting the most out the product and I am cleaning the jar for my next trip.
