Travel Tips: How to travel with dietary needs

Prepare your trip with these essential tips for managing dietary needs while traveling. Make your vacation enjoyable and hassle-free.

Traveling with food restrictions can be challenging. It can be down right frustrating. I travel with my children who collectively have a severe legume allergy, milk allergy, gluten intolerant and Celiac. Here are my tips to travel with peace in regards to food.

By Car

Worrying about how the food is prepared or it’s contents isn’t a problem when you pack. This option is perfect for those who need to watch what they eat. Even packing a high protein meal is no problem.

My daughter, who has Celiac, uses a car cooler. There are all sorts of sizes and prices. Pick one that works best for your car and how much you would need to pack. One additional thought when purchasing a car cooler is to make sure it can plug into a your hotel room. Do make sure if you get a heavy one it has wheels.

Packing your food is a cheap way to travel as well as helping those with dietary needs. Pack all your favorites! Packing also helps you get to your destination faster as you do not need to stop.

When it comes to buying a meal while traveling, it is important to research.

  1. Check the times where you will be at meal times.
  2. Research the restaurants in that area.

By Plane

Travel by plane brings challenges. You can bring in non-perishable high protein snacks. Snacks like granola, beef jerky, peanuts, chick peas and trail mix are all great options.

When it comes to meals, research the restaurants at the airports you will be visiting.

Planning ahead is what makes for a peaceful vacation.

You will need to know what is available to you, as you cannot cook.

  1. Use google to help you find places to eat that meet your dietary needs.
  2. Use an app like Find Me Gluten Free
  3. Talk to the wait staff when ordering. Let them know your needs in preparing your food.

Rental Property

Having a kitchen on your vacation is a great option to consider when reserving a lodging. Meal planning before you leave makes it even better. This way you can bring everything with you.

Amusement Parks

Amusement parks like Cedar Point have a dietary page on their website. Check the amusement park’s website before you go. This will help you know what to bring.

If you get exposed while traveling

This post is to help you avoid your allergy and have a great trip. Just in case, you do get exposed on a trip, you want to get better quickly. Talk to your doctor about what to use if you get exposed to your allergen. Make sure you take these on your trip.

  1. Make sure you carry your Epi pen and other medications when traveling
  2. Heating pad: used to sooth a sore muscle it also helps calm the tummy
  3. Fanny pack: to carry your meds
  4. Pill container: to help carry your pills
